00:00:04.589 --> 00:00:14.539
Hi everyone and welcome to Travel Time Stories with Shannon, where I share my adventures, my travel tips, and my personal story.
00:00:15.169 --> 00:00:18.379
Today we're taking a trip down memory lane.
00:00:18.589 --> 00:00:27.579
Literally I'm talking about road trips, how they used to be in the late seventies and eighties, and how they've changed today.
00:00:27.763 --> 00:00:38.503
Later in the episode, I'll share a deeply personal part of my journey, learning life-changing truths, and how those years shaped who I am today.
00:00:39.079 --> 00:00:42.408
So grab your favorite beverage and let's get into it.
00:00:42.948 --> 00:00:50.929
Long before my adventures on the high seas began, the only travel I was familiar with were road trips.
00:00:51.438 --> 00:00:59.323
When I was growing up, road trips were the way families vacationed flying, rare and expensive.
00:00:59.869 --> 00:01:09.109
Even road trips could be a big splurge, but they were an adventure full of unknowns, surprises, and moments you couldn't plan for.
00:01:09.662 --> 00:01:15.003
The younger generation, sadly, will never have these types of experiences.
00:01:15.594 --> 00:01:23.875
Back then we had paper maps, no GPS, no cell phones, and a willingness to get a little lost.
00:01:24.391 --> 00:01:26.528
I miss that today.
00:01:26.528 --> 00:01:39.109
Road trips tend to fall into two categories, your driving to get to your vacation, so it's all about speed and efficiency, quick stops, fast food, and GPS directions.
00:01:39.640 --> 00:01:53.379
Or the road trip is the vacation with everything planned out, hotel reservations, set attractions, and your entire itinerary plugged into your navigation system.
00:01:53.882 --> 00:02:02.072
These both prioritize efficiency and planned experiences, which is the opposite of how they used to be.
00:02:02.593 --> 00:02:05.338
Nostalgia really kicks in the older you get.
00:02:06.165 --> 00:02:08.205
What was a typical road trip like?
00:02:08.205 --> 00:02:09.406
Back in my day?
00:02:09.883 --> 00:02:22.562
Well picture this big station wagons or a pickup truck with a camper over the truck bed crank windows, no AC and no car seats.
00:02:23.052 --> 00:02:28.242
Someone better know how to read a map or stop to ask the locals for directions.
00:02:28.754 --> 00:02:36.675
There were also rest stops and some had welcome centers, which provided maps and brochures of things to see in the local area.
00:02:37.194 --> 00:02:50.335
You really had to pay attention to your gas gauge and you better refuel when you were close to a quarter tank because the highways were less developed and fuel stations were few and far between.
00:02:50.965 --> 00:02:56.544
Running out of gas back then could strand you in the middle of nowhere for hours or days.
00:02:57.366 --> 00:03:03.096
There was no AAA and the next fuel station could be hundreds of miles.
00:03:03.626 --> 00:03:08.336
Lodging was not something you planned out and couldn't always be found.
00:03:08.336 --> 00:03:16.311
So sometimes you slept in the car at a rest area or the side of the road or found a side street to pull off on.
00:03:16.914 --> 00:03:21.715
There was no abundance of fast food or chain restaurants along the highways.
00:03:22.134 --> 00:03:28.284
Plus eating out was a luxury or a treat, not commonplace like it is now.
00:03:28.798 --> 00:03:34.497
I bet some people are probably thinking that sounds like a nightmare, but it wasn't.
00:03:35.068 --> 00:03:40.258
All of that added to the adventure and the sense of family togetherness.
00:03:40.707 --> 00:03:45.897
It created so many memories and funny stories that happened organically.
00:03:46.401 --> 00:03:50.270
Not something you have to create to make a funny TikTok.
00:03:50.820 --> 00:03:55.080
Our road trips always started with the car being packed up the night before.
00:03:55.651 --> 00:04:00.485
The suitcases were loaded in the trunk or the camper, depending on what we were taking.
00:04:01.545 --> 00:04:19.115
Blankets and pillows, large bag of snacks, maps, color books, or other such items for entertainment, because we didn't have tablets, phones, or TVs in the car, mom would cook fried chicken and store that in a Tupperware container for the trip.
00:04:19.196 --> 00:04:26.725
The next morning we would get up early and mama would make sausage biscuits for us to eat on the road for our breakfast.
00:04:27.355 --> 00:04:36.355
She would pack up the cooler with drinks and any food that needed to stay cool, such as the fried chicken or lunch meat for sandwiches.
00:04:36.915 --> 00:04:38.685
This would get loaded into the car.
00:04:38.685 --> 00:04:48.064
Before we headed out, she always had a bag, which was a homemade first aid kit with medications, bandages and such.
00:04:48.605 --> 00:04:51.814
We would pile in the car and the adventure would be begin.
00:04:52.327 --> 00:04:56.978
The only time mama ever drove was if we were taking a trip without daddy.
00:04:57.458 --> 00:05:02.048
Otherwise, daddy always drove and mama tended to us kids.
00:05:02.656 --> 00:05:06.286
My spot was the front center console.
00:05:06.555 --> 00:05:09.016
Mama's arm was my seatbelt.
00:05:09.523 --> 00:05:34.129
Now I was a talker, and mama said she never had to worry about falling asleep on a road trip because I never stopped talking even though she prayed that I would, and she would even try to get me to play the quiet game, but I always lost if we were taking the truck with the camper, then us kids would ride in the camper with the dogs and have plenty of room to jump around.
00:05:34.670 --> 00:05:42.350
If it was the camper with the over the cab bed, then we would lay up on the bed and look out the window as we drove down the road.
00:05:42.985 --> 00:05:53.245
If you had to go to the bathroom and there wasn't a rest stop, well, let's just say a coffee can and some roadside creativity come in handy.
00:05:53.754 --> 00:06:02.935
I remember one time there were no trees or bushes around, so mama opened the back door and the front door and I stood in between them.
00:06:03.415 --> 00:06:06.689
So I had some coverage while I peed on the side of the road.
00:06:07.420 --> 00:06:15.911
In dad's truck, he had a CB radio so we could communicate with the truckers and get alerted if there were cops or anything else going on.
00:06:16.437 --> 00:06:21.060
Dad would sometimes let me be the one to get on there and say, breaker.
00:06:21.060 --> 00:06:25.115
Breaker, is anyone out there and what's your 20?
00:06:25.595 --> 00:06:27.634
Are there any smokies in the area?
00:06:28.161 --> 00:06:31.701
And I even had my own handle or radio name.
00:06:32.240 --> 00:06:35.661
We didn't plan our trips, only our destination.
00:06:36.211 --> 00:06:43.261
We played, I spy sang along to the radio and stopped at roadside attractions for entertainment.
00:06:43.790 --> 00:06:55.940
Our dogs always traveled with us, and if we stopped for the night at a motel, we would get a room that was farthest from the main lobby so we could sneak the dogs in since pets weren't allowed back then.
00:06:56.497 --> 00:06:58.838
We didn't stop at restaurants to eat.
00:06:59.288 --> 00:07:09.427
We would stop at a roadside park or a nice open area for a picnic with the food mama brought, such as the fried chicken or making sandwiches with the lunch meat.
00:07:09.964 --> 00:07:12.334
This gave everyone a break from the car.
00:07:12.485 --> 00:07:16.295
We got to run around and play for a bit and walk the dogs.
00:07:16.824 --> 00:07:22.704
We would drive until it got close to dusk, and then we would start looking for a place to stop for the night.
00:07:23.259 --> 00:07:25.329
No reservations in advance.
00:07:25.389 --> 00:07:38.295
You would look for the nearest town and then we would see which place had a vacancy sign, or if the nearest town was too far away, we would find a rest stop or place to pull off and sleep in the car for the night.
00:07:38.295 --> 00:07:41.413
I, it wasn't glamorous, but it was real.
00:07:41.980 --> 00:07:48.970
Those little inconveniences, as some would call them, are the reason I remember these trips so fondly.
00:07:49.536 --> 00:07:54.605
My mom had two best friends in her life, something I now share with her.
00:07:55.163 --> 00:08:00.202
Her two friends, grace and Stella, were family, and I loved them both dearly.
00:08:00.723 --> 00:08:03.903
Grace lived in Texas, and Stella was in Missouri.
00:08:04.463 --> 00:08:10.283
One of my favorite road trips was the last one I took with my mom as a teenager.
00:08:10.850 --> 00:08:18.319
It was a girl's trip, just me, my mom, and her best friend, grace, heading to Missouri to see her other best friend, Stella.
00:08:18.665 --> 00:08:18.725
It.
00:08:19.317 --> 00:08:23.608
We took our time stopping along the way at antique shops.
00:08:23.817 --> 00:08:33.988
Little roadside farmer stands to get fruits and vegetables, taking photos of wild flowers, and even had a stop at Meramec Caverns.
00:08:34.524 --> 00:08:39.684
We would laugh and sing along to the radio, and I learned stories about my mom.
00:08:39.684 --> 00:08:40.764
I'd never heard before.
00:08:41.426 --> 00:08:44.035
Mama had brought some tomatoes from her garden.
00:08:44.410 --> 00:08:47.020
One was bigger than a large grapefruit.
00:08:47.561 --> 00:09:03.130
So that first night at the motel, her and Grace were eating the tomatoes, and I have a picture of Mama with that large tomato taking a big bite out of it, just like an apple and spraying juice everywhere.
00:09:03.850 --> 00:09:09.461
We spent a few days with Stella and her family in Fulton before heading down to Branson.
00:09:09.980 --> 00:09:18.921
Branson was mama's favorite place to visit, and we have been many times over the years and it still holds a special place in my heart.
00:09:19.477 --> 00:09:22.717
I always feel like I'm coming home when I visit there.
00:09:23.274 --> 00:09:27.504
There is so much to see and do that, it never gets redundant for me.
00:09:28.024 --> 00:09:35.975
I have heard some people describe it as the family friendly version of Vegas, but I don't feel that's an accurate description.
00:09:36.524 --> 00:09:46.725
It does have a lot of shows with several big names, stars who perform here on a regular basis, but there is so much more than the shows to explore here.
00:09:47.235 --> 00:09:53.360
Mama loved going to the shows, and her favorite one was seeing Shoji Tabuchi.
00:09:53.835 --> 00:09:57.945
He was a Japanese American country music fiddler and singer.
00:09:58.475 --> 00:10:03.065
He had his own theater in Branson and was known as the King of Branson.
00:10:03.600 --> 00:10:07.890
He won numerous awards and was inducted into the Fiddler Hall of Fame.
00:10:08.408 --> 00:10:10.778
His show was really amazing.
00:10:11.291 --> 00:10:15.041
My favorite was always the Yakov Smirnoff Show.
00:10:15.490 --> 00:10:28.471
He is a Soviet American comedian, actor and writer, and he was big in the eighties and has his own theater in Branson, although I think his performances now are very limited.
00:10:28.995 --> 00:10:33.554
We would also go see a show at Shepherd of the Hills.
00:10:34.110 --> 00:10:40.951
Finally, a trip to Branson is never complete without spending one to two days at Silver Dollar City.
00:10:41.504 --> 00:10:46.184
Hands down, this is the best amusement park I have ever been to.
00:10:46.711 --> 00:10:50.791
It is not just an amusement park, but a whole experience.
00:10:51.360 --> 00:10:58.620
I know many people are thinking, no way Disney, universal or Six Flags are the best.
00:10:59.460 --> 00:11:02.669
I guess that's true because it depends on what you like.
00:11:03.176 --> 00:11:13.796
For me, I enjoy history, particularly the 1800's, and this park has an 1880s theme, and it's located in the Ozark Mountains.
00:11:13.796 --> 00:11:17.895
So you're surrounded by beautiful scenery throughout the park.
00:11:17.895 --> 00:11:22.635
They have craftsman demonstrations where you can watch and learn how things are made.
00:11:23.115 --> 00:11:26.686
These include milling the grain to bake bread.
00:11:27.211 --> 00:11:28.350
Blacksmith.
00:11:28.591 --> 00:11:43.921
Glass blowing candy and candle making hand forged knives, leather, pottery, furniture, wood carving, road foundry, lathe making, and soap.
00:11:44.477 --> 00:11:49.337
The park also has some amazing shows along with some great rides.
00:11:49.884 --> 00:11:55.009
It's the only park that is built around a cave, which you can take a tour of while you're there.
00:11:55.702 --> 00:12:01.552
Marvel Cave is a wet limestone cave with formations that are still growing today.
00:12:02.153 --> 00:12:12.893
It was opened for tours in 1894, and then in 1960 the theme park, which has been built around the cave entrance, opened up.
00:12:13.462 --> 00:12:18.082
You can still tour the cave and the price is included in the park entrance.
00:12:18.674 --> 00:12:32.065
You start the tour by descending 300 feet below the surface and you enter the cathedral room, which is breathtaking, and it's also the largest cave entrance in the United States.
00:12:32.630 --> 00:12:43.341
It is a strenuous tour consisting of a lot of stairs and ramps, so it's not recommended for those with mobility issues, and the tour lasts about 60 minutes.
00:12:43.880 --> 00:12:49.431
I have done the tour several times over the years, and if you're able, I recommend it.
00:12:50.004 --> 00:12:56.304
All these memories we made in Branson still feel warm in my heart all these years later.
00:12:56.870 --> 00:13:08.931
Of course, there were funny moments too, like the time my mom wore white pants on a water ride, and let's just say when they got soaked, everyone knew what color her underwear was.
00:13:09.471 --> 00:13:16.100
She learned a great lesson at the park that day, and I got the biggest laugh of my life, and I wasn't the only one.
00:13:16.654 --> 00:13:21.605
Mama's face was as red as the tomato she had eaten the night before.
00:13:22.325 --> 00:13:33.190
Thankfully, mama's best friend Grace came to the rescue with her jacket to wrap around mama's waist so we could head to the souvenir shop and mama could get some shorts to put on.
00:13:33.885 --> 00:13:40.905
Mama never wore white pants again, or if she did, she made sure she didn't have on colored underwear.
00:13:41.519 --> 00:13:58.663
A couple of other funny moments from past road trips, my mom fell asleep for the first time on a trip and woke up to discover my dad had been distracted and taken a wrong turn, and we had been driving for hours in the wrong direction.
00:13:59.222 --> 00:14:00.273
Dad's response.
00:14:01.097 --> 00:14:04.878
Well, you never would've seen this if i hadn't come this way.
00:14:05.437 --> 00:14:10.447
This became a family tagline every time someone went the wrong way.
00:14:11.054 --> 00:14:21.554
Another time, mom and I were traveling alone to Tennessee when I was very little, and I awoke in the middle of the night at the hotel screaming with an ear infection.
00:14:22.192 --> 00:14:30.202
Mom was trying to pack up quickly to take me to the ER and accidentally discharged her gun in the room.
00:14:30.785 --> 00:14:35.375
Needless to say, we never stopped at that hotel in Arkansas again.
00:14:36.000 --> 00:14:38.910
Road trips aren't just about getting somewhere.
00:14:39.390 --> 00:14:49.831
They're about the memories made along the way, and I am so blessed to have so many great memories and countless photos from the road trips done over the years.
00:14:50.424 --> 00:14:55.134
I made sure my own kids experienced road trips the old school way.
00:14:55.434 --> 00:14:59.424
No electronics just maps, coffee cans.
00:15:00.384 --> 00:15:04.284
Picnic lunches and plenty of unscripted adventures.
00:15:04.957 --> 00:15:13.817
Both my boys loved every minute of them and learned some great lessons and skills unlike me, both my boys sleep on road trips.
00:15:13.847 --> 00:15:17.658
Once they're in the car, it doesn't take long, and they are both asleep.
00:15:18.077 --> 00:15:20.837
They get this from their dad who does the same thing.
00:15:21.138 --> 00:15:24.932
So I'm left to entertain myself when we do a road trip as a family.
00:15:25.778 --> 00:15:29.618
Thankfully, my Sissy Ann is great for road trips.
00:15:29.768 --> 00:15:39.967
We talk a lot singing and dance to the radio and fly by the seat of our pants with no plans, and if we see something interesting, we stop and check it out.
00:15:40.581 --> 00:15:42.410
So here's my question for you.
00:15:42.831 --> 00:15:44.301
Do you have a favorite road trip?
00:15:44.301 --> 00:15:45.740
Memory funny.
00:15:45.890 --> 00:15:46.581
Sweet.
00:15:46.671 --> 00:15:48.681
Or maybe even a little chaotic.
00:15:49.010 --> 00:15:50.150
Share it with me.
00:15:50.571 --> 00:15:51.291
Who knows?
00:15:51.291 --> 00:15:54.681
You might just end up as a guest on travel time stories.
00:15:55.298 --> 00:15:56.977
My travel tip of the day.
00:15:57.427 --> 00:15:59.677
Map it out the old fashioned way.
00:16:00.278 --> 00:16:03.697
Even if you use GPS, bring a paper atlas.
00:16:04.357 --> 00:16:07.687
Tech can fail, but a map never loses signal.
00:16:08.288 --> 00:16:16.628
I once lent a friend my atlas for a road trip she was taking, and sure enough she hit a dead zone and had to use it.
00:16:16.837 --> 00:16:22.148
She thanked me later, so trust me, it's worth the extra space in your bag.
00:16:22.780 --> 00:16:29.951
Now, I know many of you are waiting for the story of my life with David, who I call the devil, and I promise that's coming soon.
00:16:30.570 --> 00:16:34.769
By the end of my first year in Adamsville, I had learned a hard truth.
00:16:35.159 --> 00:16:40.529
Sometimes the life you think you want to escape becomes the life you long to return to.
00:16:41.279 --> 00:16:48.090
I'd also learned that even in unfamiliar places, there are pockets of belonging if you're willing to find them.
00:16:48.696 --> 00:16:54.336
My life in Adamsville was just beginning and so was the next chapter of my story.
00:16:54.998 --> 00:17:03.307
During my two years of junior high, I had two close friends, Kecia and Sarah, and we became the three amigos.
00:17:03.890 --> 00:17:14.240
When we weren't busy in band, you could catch us at the local hangout spots, which were the movie theater, bowling alley, or my personal favorite, the skating rink.
00:17:14.857 --> 00:17:21.758
My brother-in-law, Kenny, had taught me all of the roller skating tricks, skating backwards.
00:17:22.147 --> 00:17:29.738
T stop crossovers, spins, jumps, bunny hop, shoot the duck.
00:17:30.008 --> 00:17:32.498
One foot glide, you name it.
00:17:32.528 --> 00:17:34.028
I could do them all.
00:17:34.748 --> 00:17:38.228
I had custom white skates with purple pom poms.
00:17:38.528 --> 00:17:44.978
'cause purple is my signature color and I love showing people that big girls can skate too.
00:17:45.615 --> 00:17:50.474
The roller rink was lights, music, arcade games, and pinball.
00:17:50.714 --> 00:17:52.335
It was my happy place.
00:17:52.724 --> 00:17:58.125
It still makes me sad that most rinks closed before my kids were old enough to skate.
00:17:58.875 --> 00:18:03.974
One of my favorite movies is Xanadu from 1980 with Olivia Newton John.
00:18:04.515 --> 00:18:08.744
It's an American musical fantasy film and includes rollerskating.
00:18:09.255 --> 00:18:12.134
My favorite song from the film is Magic.
00:18:12.750 --> 00:18:17.010
Do you have a favorite movie or song that takes you back to a great memory?
00:18:17.340 --> 00:18:18.300
Leave a comment.
00:18:18.361 --> 00:18:19.441
I'd love to hear it.
00:18:20.117 --> 00:18:28.008
I was just starting to settle into life in Adamsville when on my 13th birthday, my mom dropped a bombshell.
00:18:28.518 --> 00:18:29.748
I was adopted.
00:18:30.394 --> 00:18:32.674
Everyone in the family knew except me.
00:18:33.275 --> 00:18:34.930
That knowledge cut so deep.
00:18:35.570 --> 00:18:37.040
I never saw this coming.
00:18:37.431 --> 00:18:41.721
It felt like the wind had been knocked out of me stunned.
00:18:41.750 --> 00:18:43.641
All I could do was stare at her.
00:18:44.151 --> 00:18:55.671
She said she had wanted to tell me before now, but could never bring herself to do it, but she was telling me now because she was worried one of my nephews or cousins was going to spill the beans.
00:18:56.292 --> 00:19:03.252
Once the shock wore off, I was overcome by such intense anger that I didn't know what to do with it.
00:19:03.492 --> 00:19:10.423
So I lashed out at her with my words and said very terrible things to her that I would come to regret later.
00:19:11.059 --> 00:19:13.670
I did ask her about my birth parents.
00:19:14.119 --> 00:19:16.880
She wouldn't gimme any information about them.
00:19:17.089 --> 00:19:19.400
Said I had to wait till I turned 18.
00:19:20.299 --> 00:19:23.779
Can you imagine the cracks this caused in my psyche?
00:19:24.500 --> 00:19:25.700
I was 13.
00:19:26.059 --> 00:19:36.259
The age where everything is already confusing because your body's going through so many changes from child to teen and the hormones are out of control.
00:19:36.920 --> 00:19:46.519
I was still overcoming dramatic childhood issues and a move that had created fractures and now I'm hit with this.
00:19:47.144 --> 00:19:58.964
And on top of that, you tell me you can't gimme any information that might help me process the anger, confusion, and endless questions stayed with me.
00:19:58.964 --> 00:20:07.605
For years, I was told that I was lucky because this meant I was wanted and the life I had was better than what it would've been.
00:20:08.260 --> 00:20:23.621
It was the beginning of a rebellion that would eventually lead me into the arms of a man who would destroy my spirit, strip me of the little self-confidence I had, and put me through many forms of abuse.
00:20:24.280 --> 00:20:28.145
Ultimately killed our child and almost succeeded in killing me.
00:20:28.847 --> 00:20:33.077
After getting this information, things in my life would change dramatically.
00:20:33.258 --> 00:20:36.258
And this started with stepping away from the church.
00:20:36.978 --> 00:20:41.627
I started having bad mood swings, which convinced my mom I was bipolar.
00:20:41.897 --> 00:20:44.268
However, I was not diagnosed with that.
00:20:45.063 --> 00:20:50.792
She sent me to this group that was supposed to help kids with issues and it didn't help anything.
00:20:50.823 --> 00:20:55.292
It led me further astray, but at least my friends were there with me.
00:20:55.542 --> 00:21:00.460
Kecia, Sarah, and Alicia were all part of the group during high school.
00:21:00.490 --> 00:21:02.049
I joined every group I could.
00:21:02.890 --> 00:21:05.140
Four H Home Economics.
00:21:05.230 --> 00:21:07.630
FFA Spanish Club.
00:21:08.079 --> 00:21:12.579
These groups took me to Nashville and Atlanta for competitions.
00:21:12.759 --> 00:21:17.500
My first big trips without Mama, there were glass elevators.
00:21:18.130 --> 00:21:23.049
Riding the Atlanta subway, which goes both above and underground.
00:21:23.559 --> 00:21:28.569
Sneaking out past curfew and visiting my first Hard rock cafe.
00:21:29.109 --> 00:21:35.410
We even qualified for a trip to California and Disneyland, but my mama wouldn't let me go.
00:21:36.039 --> 00:21:38.259
She said it was too far from home.
00:21:38.875 --> 00:21:41.711
Freshman year, brought some new students to our school.
00:21:42.625 --> 00:21:44.226
One was named Tonya.
00:21:44.700 --> 00:21:46.829
She lived in a town called Michie.
00:21:47.365 --> 00:21:54.865
She was a tall brunette who was bold, stylish, and confident I wanted to be just like her.
00:21:55.586 --> 00:22:03.715
I was so lucky that she had some of the same classes, so this gave me a chance to get to know her, and we quickly became friends.
00:22:04.256 --> 00:22:07.316
She brought this shy girl out of her shell.
00:22:08.036 --> 00:22:10.705
She went from my best friend to my sister.
00:22:11.315 --> 00:22:20.494
But that's a story for next time full of Yugo Cars, wild Adventures and a twist that changed both of our lives.
00:22:21.157 --> 00:22:32.978
My hope is for everyone to make memories for life through travel, whether it's a cross country road trip, a roller skating rink in your hometown, or your first time riding a subway.
