Embracing Inclusion: A Conversation with Jenna Udenberg

Discover how Jenna Udenberg redefines disability and advocates for inclusion. Learn why language matters and how we can create accessible spaces for all.

Welcome back to Travel Time Stories with Shannon, where real journeys meet real stories, and healing happens one conversation at a time. Today's conversation is one that will shift perspectives and invite all of us to think deeper about inclusion, belonging, and what it truly means to create space for everyone.

Today, Ann and I were honored to speak with Jenna Udenberg, a thought-provoking author, disability advocate, and accessibility educator. Diagnosed with juvenile arthritis at just seven years old, Jenna has faced life's challenges with remarkable resilience and determination. As a 2020 Bush Fellow, she uses her voice to create more inclusive and accessible spaces for all.

Jenna’s memoir, *Within My Spokes*, shares heartfelt stories of perseverance and healing. Through her nonprofit, Above and Beyond With You, Jenna is transforming lives by championing inclusion and breaking barriers far beyond minimum standards. In this post, we’ll explore the key insights Jenna shared about disability, language, and the importance of inclusion.

Understanding Disability: A Natural Part of the Human Experience
Jenna emphasizes that disability is just a natural part of the human experience. With one in four Americans identifying as disabled, it’s crucial to acknowledge and normalize disability.

Jenna explains, "The reality is that disability is just a natural part of the human experience. When you consider that one in four Americans identify as being disabled, that’s huge. The stigma surrounding the term 'disability' often prevents people from embracing it."

She reflects on her own journey and how societal perceptions can shape our understanding of disability. "When I was growing up, I grappled with terms like 'handy-capable,' but ultimately, I realized we need to simply accept that disability is just a part of life."

The Impact of Language on Perception
Jenna argues that words hold significant power, and the language we use can either empower or stigmatize individuals with disabilities. She shares a poignant example: "In kindergarten, we teach children about colors, but as adults, we assign value to those colors. Why should we assign value to people based on their abilities?"

This perspective encourages us to reconsider our language choices. Instead of framing disability as a negative trait, we should embrace it as a part of the diverse human experience. By doing so, we can foster understanding and acceptance.

Creating Inclusive Spaces
In her work, Jenna advocates for creating spaces that are accessible and welcoming to everyone. She believes that inclusion goes beyond compliance with regulations; it’s about fostering an environment where everyone feels valued.

"Accessibility isn’t just about meeting minimum standards; it’s about creating spaces that genuinely welcome people of all abilities," Jenna states. She highlights the importance of listening to the voices of individuals with disabilities to understand their needs better.

The Role of Curiosity in Inclusion
Jenna encourages us to approach conversations about disability with curiosity rather than assumptions. She shares her friend’s advice: "How would you want me to describe you to someone who doesn’t know you?" This question empowers individuals to define themselves on their terms, fostering dignity and respect.

The Importance of Conversations
Jenna stresses the need for ongoing conversations about disability. "The world is moving too fast, and we often skip the heartfelt discussions that are essential for understanding one another," she explains. By slowing down and engaging in meaningful conversations, we can break down barriers and foster a culture of inclusion.

In conclusion, Jenna Udenberg’s insights on disability and inclusion challenge us to rethink our perspectives and actions. By embracing disability as a natural part of life and fostering inclusive spaces, we can create a world where everyone belongs.
